FAQ

How does direct care work with my existing insurance?
Your insurance benefits remain completely unchanged for all medical treatments, procedures, and medications. Direct care membership adds enhanced robust annual comprehensive diagnostic exams (that may include treatment) and ongoing unlimited follow-up exams that are collectively designed to deliver services well beyond what insurance covers. And, if or when we believe that plan-covered services can substantially assist you, if we are in-network with your plan we can and will provide those services, too.
What's the difference between routine exam medical care and plan-covered medical care?
Annual and follow-up comprehensive diagnostic routine exams lack any time or scope restrictions that insurance plans impose. And, these ongoing routine comprehensive exams are supported all year by robust communication services support that are also not restricted by plan. The patient cost for these services is stable, and transparent. By contrast, plan-covered medical care typically requires medical necessity and restricts services (time and scope) to track medical necessity. Preventative exams are also limited and restricted in terms of frequency, scope, and time. And, plan-covered care can often generate unpredictable and non-transparent out-of-pocket costs that are neither stable nor transparent. The end result of these variations is that direct care subscription services provide a vastly superior care experience (for both preventative exam and care/treatments). And plan-covered services will only be provided on occasions when it makes sense it will largely be rare, as we will focus on direct care to solve most health challenges.
Can I use HSA or FSA or HRA or MSA funds for direct care subscription fees?
Annual and follow-up routine diagnostic exams costs constitute qualified medical expenses under IRS Pub 502. Thus, our direct care subscription program fees are designed to qualify for pre-tax and employer funding.
How do I know which treatment is right for me?
Dr. So develops personalized treatment recommendations based on your specific glaucoma type, severity, genetic factors, lifestyle preferences, and treatment goals. The comprehensive evaluation includes advanced testing to determine the most appropriate approach for your individual situation.
Are clinical trials safe?
Clinical trials follow strict FDA safety protocols and are closely monitored. As a principal investigator, Dr. So only offers trials he believes may benefit patients. Participation is voluntary, and you can withdraw at any time while maintaining your regular care.
What if I travel frequently for work?
Remote monitoring technology and virtual consultation capabilities support frequent travelers. Home monitoring devices work anywhere, and Dr. So can coordinate care with providers in other locations when needed.
How accurate is home eye pressure monitoring?
Modern home tonometry devices provide medical-grade accuracy comparable to clinic equipment. Multiple daily readings actually provide more comprehensive data than single clinic measurements, leading to better treatment decisions.
What happens if my home monitoring shows concerning results?
Immediate alerts are sent to Dr. So's monitoring system. You'll be contacted promptly to arrange urgent evaluation or treatment adjustment. This real-time monitoring often prevents vision-threatening pressure spikes.
Is the monitoring equipment difficult to use?
Home monitoring devices are designed for patient use with comprehensive training provided. Most patients become comfortable with the technology within a few days, and ongoing support is always available.
